In the end, women, from the beginning of civilization up to now, have trudged with gender prejudice in the work environment in a world dominated by a patriarchal society. Many businesses have been more brought up for a world in which men were the main “bread winners” while the women stayed at home to take care of the house and children. Even if women did work, they were always given menial jobs. Nowadays, though modernity has allowed women to gain more freedom than they had before, society has invariably preferred to uphold certain stereotypical ideas that still limit the opportunities that women should be able to have access to. …
All the facts mint towards equality in the workplace, it is more the attitude that makes the genders unequal” (Unruly). One reason women are seen as unequal to men in the workplace is that they can become pregnant. Because women get pregnant in the middle of their career, they have to take time off and go on maternity leave. Another reason is that raising children requires them to work fewer hours and not be able to work overtime or travel frequently.
Both reasons bring an inconvenience that can cost the company money and time for a mere three months. Because of this cultural phenomenon, women are often paid less than men.Though the Equal Pay Act specifically prohibits discrimination based on gender in the workplace and requires equal work for equal pay that is not the case. ‘Women across industries are paid less than men who do the same work, but in some industries, the gap is particularly large” (Waldron). In fact, women are paid far less than male coworkers. “In 201 2, full-time employed women earned just 80.
9 percent of the salaries their male counterparts did” (Casserole). Such treatment has shown to cause much disappointment to women who have worked longer and harder than some en who have the same jobs.Finally, though women and men both have the opportunity to work the same jobs, men are often favored of women for gaining a promotion. “Men’s promotion rates were still 2. 2 percent higher than women’s. This is large relative to the overall mean promotion rate of 9 percent and the raw gender difference in promotion rates of 3 percentage points.
” (German) Because this gap between the rates at which women are promoted versus that of men is significant enough, women are less likely to gain promotions that could possibly raise their salary and are limited to refractory jobs or jobs that require them to be subservient to men.As said by the Huffiness’s, ” .. 97 percent of full-time working women were in jobs that typically paid men more” (Fairchild). The bottom line is that women have struggled against a prejudice that has lasted for centuries, particularly in the workplace. However, despite their struggles to compete in a predominantly patriarchal world, women have shown laudable work ethics, such as being more organized and dedicated to their jobs than men have. Women should not be punished for familial responsibilities.
