“Whoever said money can’t buy happiness has never owned a pet.” Everyone loves pets, ” a dog is man’s best friend”, people love watching cat videos and spend hundreds or thousands to take care of their pets. In fact, in Canada, 57% of households have a pet. What is considered a pet? A pet is a “domestic or tamed animal kept for companionship or pleasure.” Pets should almost be a requirement in life, not just for companionship and happiness but because they also increase your social skills and benefit your health as well. A big factor on why people get pets is because they make you happy. They don’t make you happy because they are cute or fluffy, but for actual scientific reasons. When you stroke a dog or cat scientific studies show it can calm you down which lowers stress and overall makes you happier. More research shows that when you play with your pets the serotonin and dopamine (feel-good chemicals) levels in your brain increase. Another study shows that children with pets develop more empathy, and in a study people who spent money on other people and not themselves felt happier. Pets make their owners more social. If you have a dog everytime you go for a walk you meet new people and make many new friends. When you move homes its very difficult meeting new people, but having a pet could help that. A study shows that pet owners were 60% more likely than non pet owners to get to know people in their neighbourhood. More research shows that people more attached to pets have a stronger role in their community and show more leadership. Another study shows that people will be nicer to you if you have a dog with you. Finally, women find men who own dogs more attractive. Have you ever heard the saying, “A pet a day keeps the doctor away.” probably not but it is completely true. It is very surprising, but there are several health benefits to pets. As mentioned above, pets lower stress and having less stress is extremely healthy because stress can cause heart disease, asthma and can lead to smoking. If you have a baby and own a cat or a dog, your baby will having a lower chance of getting allergies or asthmabecause the being exposed to bacteria and germs can strengthen their immune system. . The final way pets improve health is improve your heart. A study show that people who never owned a cat have a 40% higher chance of dying from a heart attack. Another study shows that dog owners have a better survival rate one year after a heart attack.Having a pet has so many great benefits and people who don’t have one are seriously missing out. Wouldn’t it be great to be healthier, happier and more social by having a loving pet? Whether that is a dog, cat, mouse, hamster, or even a snake, they all enhance your life and well being. In conclusion, pets are great, and maybe should be free for people who feel sad or lonely, but that will be another essay.
