What makes us who we are? What makes us who we are can be a lot of different things, people or experiences. Knowing what makes us who we are is important because that’s what the world see’s. That’s the impression people get from you, and usually their attitude towards you. Your culture and the people you spend time around are usually the most influential. Culture is the single most powerful influence on how we perceive the world and everything in it.
Anyone who does not share in our culture will always appear odd and they will think the same of us. Every culture has their own “rules”, guidelines, social expectations. Not following these usually result in rejection and isolation, not a good feeling. The problem is not everyone will want to follow the same beliefs as the people that brought them up, or even of their whole culture.
Going against the norm is a difficult step to take, but worth it in the end. That step is what pushes society forward, it’s what makes us more accepting and Just overall better as a whole. The people we grow up around are the most influential people of our lives.
If you grow up with people who bring you up with good values, you’ll live your life with hose and probably pass them onto your kids. Not everyone is lucky enough to have good people bring them up, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that person will be bad too. Sometimes your parent’s barely even have an effect on you, good or bad, and you look up to another family member, or even someone you don’t know.
However you look up to when you’re younger will usually influence who you are. In the end, anything can change us into something, for better or for worse. There is not one sole thing that defines us, but a collection of memories, people and lessons we’ve learnt along the way.
