This novel portrays the higher standard class of New York in the 1900s. It follows the life of Nick who has been friends with the rich, and poor or so to say West and East Eggers. In the book Gatsby which his real name is Jay Gatsby, the son of poor farmers. Tom Buchanan is Daisy’s wealthy husband, and he is also an ex-member of Yale. The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald is a classic novel. In most of these characters lives, money is the center attention, even though money won’t buy happiness. At the beginning of the novel, Tom and Daisy moved to the East Egg. “They had spent a year in France for no particular reason, and then drifted here and their unrest fully wherever people played polo and were rich together.” (Chapter 1 page 6). Yes, Daisy and Tom may be rich together, but when they went to France for a year for no reason because they were lonely. When they said played they basically mean they were being rich together. They were both not stable and their idea of them moving Nick and people who aren’t old rich didn’t understand. Money is not a problem for them because they were born rich. However, they spend money for a particular reason. They used money just to be using money because they believed that money solved everything. Little did they know, it does not. Daisy stated, “I’ve been everywhere and done everything.” (Chapter 1 page 22) She has money, but her choice to marry Tom, however, the money she is gaining significate about the violent life she lives in. In Chapter one she states, “Sophisticated— God, I’m sophisticated!” (Chapter 1 page 22). She thinks she’s sophisticated because she saw more of the world than what other people saw. When Nick told Daisy, “her voice is full of money.” (Chapter 7 page 120) meaning Dasiy’s voice has a good quality because she always had been well provided and have been well educated in her life. Many people wonder what the voice of money sound likes according to Dasiy’s voice? Wherever it sounds you can’t separate from a human. Even if you are born with money, money doesn’t buy happiness. Nick claims, “Its lacks a glamorous surface and lies fallow and gray valley halfway between West Egg and New York.” (Chapter 2 page 26) The quote means between The West Egg and New York there is a dry, empty land, a desolate plain where ashes are dumped. All the characters didn’t just have money, they also had glamour. Daisy speaks to Nick and Jordan the words, “that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool. (Chapter 1 page 3)” Daisy calls her daughter a fool to describe her hopes to her little daughter. She doesn’t call her daughter a fool in a bad way, but in a good way. Daisy implies that the life of women is a little happier on ignorance. The Great Gatsby is filled with characters who live careless, lonely even though they had all the money they want. Everybody in the book is obsessed with money. They think it makes life better. However, in reality, money is just another thing that the world has problems with. The quote that sums up the topic of my whole paper is, “your voice is full of money” replies Nick. (Chapter 7 page 120). He believes that her voice is untouchable and that it’s full of money. In the book “The Great Gatsby” everything is about money. They believe money causes happiness and love, so Daisy thinks.
