They also promised him that his descendants will be kings as well. So is Macbeth using the supernatural to excuse himself from blame? for example, The Witches told him that Duncan has to die – it is his fate. Is killing Duncan something that secretly Macbeth wanted to do to gain more power or did he commit the act purely because The Witches told him it must be done so that Macbeth will become Thane Of Cawdor and King. “Witchcraft celebrates Pale Hecate’s offerings”( ACT II SC i ).
Hecate is daughter of Perses and Asteria who were greek Gods, she was a magician who raised a temple to the goddess named Diana. The temple was the place where Diana would perform her sacrifice rituals, she performed human sacrifice. What Lady Macbeth means by this quote in the context of the play is that Macbeth is easily persuaded and manipulated, he is a loyal and loving husband so he believes what Lady Macbeth tells him and She uses this against him because she knows that Macbeth believes in the supernatural. This brings me to my next point. In the play Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is the character that makes the understanding and reading of Macbeth impossible. Lady Macbeth finds herself entering a dark path in her life and she finds it difficult, impossible to turn back. She influenced Macbeth to do things to benefit her.
Like many female characters in old plays and stories, Lady Macbeth was put into a role not in her own choosing. However, like her husband she becomes bloodthirsty because she wants more power. Lady Macbeth becomes even more blood thirty than Macbeth, she persuades him to use his power as king to carry out violence against others. I find Lady Macbeth to be a very difficult character to understand, she adds a new level of depth to an otherwise pretty straightforward play because of her obsession of having power and blood on her hands.
In the beginning of the play we see that Macbeth is ambitious and wants to become king. He must have wanted to have become king before The Witches predicted it, why would the mentioning of become king have had such an immediate effect otherwise? The first thing MAcbeth does after hearing The Witches predictions is write a letter to Lady Macbeth that she will one day become queen and that Duncan is coming over. Her immediate response is that Duncan must be killed under her roof. her next lines in the play are chilling in the intensity”…
Come, you spiritsThat tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direct cruelty! make thick my blood; Stop up the access and passage to remorseThat no compunctious visitings of natureShake my fell purpose, nor keep peace betweenThe effer and it! Come to my woman’s breasts,And take my milk for gall, you murdering ministerWherever in your sightless substancesYou will wait on nature’s mischief!”When Macbeth appears, the first thing Lady Macbeth wants to fo it to start planning the act of Duncan’s murder. Macbeth questions if this is really a wise thing to do.HE demurs with uncertainty and says; “We will not proceed no further in this business:ha hath honour’d me of late; and I have bought Golden opinions from all sorts of people, “Lady Macbeth is not pleased with the response she is given and makes her own plan to plot Duncan’s murder. She is the one who commits to killing King Duncan, however she can’t do it and so in this moment Macbeth decides he needs to take responsibility, he himself goes and does the deed.
