“On the eighth floor of Virtual Processes & Systems Corporation youhang up your jacket in the still kitchen, kick off your runners and get intoyour Crocs. The water boiler has to be filled and switched on to have the waterscalding by the time the catering girl comes in at 8.30 a.m.
” All the rest is up toreader to figure out. When reading the story, we get the feeling, that she isquite young, because we get to know that she is wearing an animal print skirt, and that just shows us that she is a young woman, because which older womanwould wear a skirt with little animal print on. It does not seem like she hasplans for her future, because in the story, we can read that she has been doingthe same thing for the past two years, and she has been working for thecorporation. When she meets up for work she already have her whole day planedout, like it’s her routine. Annie is a static character, she is the same personthrough the whole story, she does not change.
In the short story “TheLadder”, the point of view plays a really big role throughout the whole story. The writer Sheila Purdy uses the second person point of view, it helps toaddress the reader, it also helps the reader to get in the right mood. When youare reading the story, the narrator puts the reader in the main character’smind like her inner voice, and that effect makes us readers see through Annie’seyes. Her inner voice is like another person commentating with a lot of detailswhat Annie is doing, but the person can also make her anxious. We can see thiswhere the story told us ” In the two years you’ve been here, you’ve neverdone more than clear the big table, wipe out the executive fridge, empty thebins, line up the leather blotters, straighten the velvet swivel chairs You’venever done any serving. The title of the story “The Ladder can refer toAnnie promotion. Her supervisor told Annie that if she did her task well, shewould consider promoting her. Every career has some sort of upgrade.
The ladderis a way to show the opportunity Annie have. Annie is the main character of the short story and thenarrator adopts her point of view. In fact, it is as if the story is toldthrough Annie’s perspective. At the beginning, we do not know anything aboutAnnie’s age or how she looks. We only know that she works in a big corporation.
The “career ladder” is an expression used toindicate the fact that there is an opportunity in every career, one must onlylook up and take the next step. This is exactly what Annie has to do, to climbthe career ladder and find a position that suits her. The ladder does not seemto have an end, showing that one must never settle, as there are other peoplewho come from behind and who are ready to replace you. Annie is obviously a hardworking girl.
She does her jobproperly and with much attention and care as the story told us.However, no matter how hard working she may be, Annie hold upimportant decisions related to her career. She feels that she must advance, butshe does not find the proper way to do it. She is not lazy, but she is notmentally prepared to make the next step which in the text told us “In the twoyears you’ve been here, you’ve never done more than clear the big table, wipeout the executive fridge, empty the bins,”
