The most important philosophical attributes of Persephone are emotions and responsibility’ Each person possesses distinct qualities from each other, which then explains why people make different decisions and act differently. In my opinion, the most important philosophical attributes of Persephone are emotions and responsibility, because those are the two basic characteristics that often shape people’s behaviors and life outcomes. First of all, emotions can be defined as: “A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships with others” (Oxford Dictionaries Online, 2010).Emotions are inherent in every living creature. Emotions could arise from almost everything around us: circumstances we are in, events we hear and see or our relationships with other people. Humans have complicated emotional system, which helps set humans from non-human creatures. In the lecture: “Facing the Animal You See in the Mirror” by Christine M.
Crossroad, the professor has pointed out a possible reason why humans deem it as reasonable to inflict deaths on animals, which is that most people think animals have low intelligence and emotional complexity.Though this humans’ view n animals is not completely Justified, the view has proved one strong point that emotions are so important and inherent in humans that humans often consider emotion complexity as a privileged attribute over non-human creatures. Humans consider themselves more superior than animals because animals are not able to demonstrate their emotional qualities as strongly as humans. Humans can have many states of emotions at the same time, which can sometimes be conflicting. In the novel “Fraternities” by Mary Shelley, Victor is a character with lots of emotional conflicts. One example could be when Victor is back in Believe, he feels relaxed at the tatty of nature, but also fearful of the monster and extremely regretful of his actions to create the monster.
Emotions influence people in many ways. Emotions help us realize our needs and then act to fulfill our needs. In the book “Galoshes” by Stephen Mitchell, Enkindles death has provoked some incredibly strong and conflicting emotions inside Galoshes. Although Galoshes does not fear to die in battles, he fears to die in the same manner as Unkind, a death that is wholly uncontrollable and destined by Gods. His brotherly love for Unkind and his fear of mortality have helped him to realize the need for a quest for immortality.
That is to say the basis of Shillelagh’s infamous quest for immortality is largely determined by emotions. Furthermore, Shillelagh’s emotions are so powerful that lead to his relentless and extraordinary efforts throughout the Journey. Galoshes shows an invincibly ardent passion to achieve what he wants, and even though he does not succeed, he still lead to significant actions is in the monster character in the novel “Fraternities”.As reflected from the monster’s confrontation with Victor, the monster is an entity that has emotions and masters human language. It knows that it is an ugly physical being hat is feared and rejected by human society.
It therefore feels desperately sorrowful and lonely because society does not recognize its identity. The monster’s deep frustration has rendered it determined to convince the cottagers of its human identity. Unfortunately, the cottagers reject the monster and the monster then develops a new emotional feeling, that is, the deep hatred towards Victor. The fierce hatred has prompted the monster to murder William, Elizabeth and Henry. Therefore, it is clear that the monster’s actions in the novel are greatly influenced by a complex system of emotions. Emotions can also help connect people. People tend to sympathize with and help other creatures who are in the same situation or in a situation that they have already been through. Love and friendships could totally be built on that simple emotional sympathy.
For example, in “Fraternities”, Victor understands the monster’s loneliness because he, himself, has been experiencing extreme loneliness.Victor’s sympathy towards the monster has led to his decision to create a female monster to cure the monster’s solitude. Victor’s increasing sympathy towards the monster has arguably helped the relationship between the monster and Victor get considerably closer. Responsibility can be defined as “The state or fact of having a duty to deal with something” (Oxford Dictionaries Online, 2010).
Responsibility is the trait that can clearly set humans from non-human creatures. People think about how their decisions can affect other people surrounding them before making decisions.People have responsibility towards themselves and society. On the other hand, animals often behave to satisfy their own emotions and interests. This point is clearly set out in the lecture: “Facing the Animal You See in the Mirror”, but the professor also emphasizes that since humans have responsibility, we should also be more responsible towards non-human world. Responsibility is a vital quality because people with responsibility often think well before making decisions and so their decisions often yield desirable results.
Furthermore, it is important to take responsibility even when a decision yields unfavorable outcomes, because accepting responsibility helps people realize their mistakes so that they will not commit the same mistakes again in the future. There is no possible way for people to take lessons from failure without demonstrating their responsibilities for the effects of their failures. Besides, people with responsibility often receive sympathy and assistance from other surrounding people. Therefore, responsibility is an indispensable quality of successful people.People who fulfill their duties often get favorable outcomes. For example, in the story “Reason” by Isaac Asimov, the two scientists, Powell and Donovan, have the responsibility to keep the station run smoothly.
However, a significant problem arises when Cutie no longer wants to listen to orders from the two scientists because it does not think it is made by humans to serve for humans’ interests. And the two scientists are forced to stay in a confined mom so they cannot interfere in Cutie’s handling the station. However, without humans operation of the station, it is likely that the Earth will be hit by a hard storm.Powell and Donovan have showed their incredible responsibility towards humankind out of its stubborn belief. They have impressively built another robot in front of Cutie to prove that Cutie is created by humans. And Cutie is also a responsible robot because it follows the rules of the Master, ensuring that the station is working smoothly. Altogether, Cutie and the two scientist’s responsibilities have ensured that the station is working well and the Earth is safe.
On the other hand, people who are not able to fulfill their duties often get undesirable outcomes. One notable example is the character Victor in “Fraternities”. Firstly, he shows his irresponsibility towards mankind by creating a monster Just to satisfy his own feelings. He then casts his own creation away and the monster is on its own on the quest of self-identification and integration into society.
If Victor undertakes the efforts to educate the monster and helps introduce the monster into human world, Victor’s fate will become much more favorable. Victor is irresponsible not only towards his creation, but also for his act of reaction.
