In a medical institution, there is a dire need for the employees to be aware of infection control guidelines. This will not only prevent the spread of infection but also safeguard the employees.
Employees should be aware that paramount importance should be given to infection control for the benefit of not only the patients but also for their own.Infection control assurance will not only provide better health care service but it would also make the the medical institution a more conducive and safer workplace.A training program must be set up and this should start with informing the employees about the importance of controlling infection.
All health care workers must include infection prevention and control in their everyday practice. Mandatory training is important and that it must be conducted on an annual basis to be continually updated (Royal College of Nursing, 2005).The medical institution must also make sure that all health care workers are given the necessary vaccinations to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. It can also be prevented by informing the health personnel the importance of the use of barriers such as gown, gloves and eye protection if deemed necessary, safe handling of needles, scalpel and any other sharp instrument and devices with safety features (The Public Health Foundation).The program should be a step by step process which would discuss one area for every training session and the institution should make sure that the employees gained and will make use of the knowledge after every training session. The training should include a review of the standard operating procedures in infection control and what needs to be done in case of infection exposure.Proper incentives such as bonuses should be given for those employees who attend the program.
On the other hand, self-learning should also integrated if the employee would be unable to attend the regular training program. However, to ensure that the self-learning has been effective, the employee must first take a Post Test to evaluate knowledge on infection control (Boston Medical Center, 2000).For the employees to maintain their interest in the training program, the medical institution could give rewards for those employees who get a perfect attendance in the series of training programs. The institution could also give additional compensation for those who pass an exam that would be administered after each session. Good compensation and benefits keeps employees happy.
To motivate the use of the knowledge gained in the training program,the medical institution needs to educate its employees on the importance of preventing the spread of infection as well as the risks of not following the guidelines for proper infection control. There should be supervision.Controlling infection is necessary in any medical institution in order to deliver quality health care service and in ensuring a clean and safe workplace. Thus, motivating employees to follow the proper guidelines in infection control is a must.
