The happy prince is a short story written by Oscar Wiled for kids in the Us. Oscar Wild’s famous work ‘The importance of being Ernest’ was published after the happy prince.
So the happy prince can be considered as the work as a stepping stone for Wiled to write what is considered to be as his best work. In the story of the happy prince, the author intended to highlight a few main themes or ideology such as hypocrisy, poverty and exploitation.Hypocrisy is simply defined as a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, that he or she does not actually possess, specially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs but hypocrisy can also refer to a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, especially one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements. In the Happy prince short Story the issue Of hypocrisy is show in two phases. The first phase is before the statue lose all of its’ wealth and the second is after the statue lose all of its’ greatness. The town councilors at the very beginning of the story refers to the statue as being as beautiful as a weathercock. This simile shows how ignorant he is as thereafter are not something that has a high artificial value.
The town councilor then refer to the statue as “a little better than a beggar” later on in the story. The Town Councilors’ are depicted as hypocrites and it is highlighted by the writer in the sentence with this line “who wished to gain a reputation for having artistic tastes” and this is as mentioned is hypocrisy which is to show publicly approved attitude. The councilors also try to sound practical when he said “only not quite so useful” and then the writer further strengthens his hypocritical character by adding that “people should think IM unpractical, which he really was not”. He is so hypocrite that he adds that he is not quite useful for the fear of the His because in those days people believed that art must have had some usefulness, otherwise it was bad art. The town councilors is the form of typical hypocrisy in the short story.Happy prince also tackles the issue of poverty during the times of renaissance as the income of the countries are used to strengthen the arsenal for the war and are used to build statues of gold and symbols that depicts the wealth of the ruler of a particular nation.
During these times, most f the low class people or people that are not related to the royal blood often overlooked and never treated equally or given the right financial support from their ruler. Oscar Wilder highlights this in her short story from the happy prince’s point of view. The prince was not aware of the poor part of the city and the need of support they need until it was too late. He was separated by the wall that obstructed his view.
The prince after turning into a statue realizes that in his rich nation there are poor people just pushing through their day with little food and money as shown in the case Of the sick boy hose mother does not even have enough money to fund his medicines. Poverty also is pictured in a subtle way in sentence such as “The students’ house roof that has a hole in it”.The short story revolves around poverty and how the status is doing a self-sacrifice to help the people in need. The clever use of words to focus the contrast of the rich and poor such as the beautiful girl who came out from the balcony was excited about her new dress meanwhile the seamstress is not even having enough money to buy her son an orange. The contrast of rich and poor depicted the issue of poverty in the Happy Prince. Exploitation is a common agenda during the time Happy Prince was penned down and Wiled took it as one the main ideology behind this story and inhibits the story with issues of exploitation.
Wiled has brought out exploitation brilliantly by showing the people at court, the Jews, and the rich are exploiting the poor. The Mayor and the Town Councilors represent the exploitation of the power. The son of the seamstress is suffering from fever, but she cannot attend to him. She is embroidering passionflowers for the Queen’s made-of-honor to wear at the next court-ball. The poor are working art, but they cannot buy even oranges.
This is the worst kind of exploitation. On one side, some people are so poor that they are starving and on the other hand the rich are making merry and the Jews are weighing out money on copper scales. The writers of that time are also being exploited. They are cold and cold with hunger. The Mayor and the Town Councilors are exploiting their powers.
Each one of them himself wants to have built statue. The issue of exploitation is exaggerated when the Mayor issues a proclamation that birds are not to be allowed to die there. This is to add to the theme of exploitation f power that was very much frequent during those times. The issues of exploitation, poverty and hypocrisy is tackled in the Happy Prince by Wiled and it is very much relevant to the actual agenda of that time and the relevance is what makes the story relatable and serves the main purpose of being a reminder to the growing children that wealth is something that should be shared equally and no one should be treated unequally.
