The research being conducted is going to be based on theocelot species. This species of animal has been given the common name of anocelot; however, scientifically referred to as Leopardus Pardalis, and can befound in the Animalia Kingdom. An ocelot can be described as a medium-sized catlocated throughout South America, from habitats in Southern Texas and in Argentina. The ocelot cat is one of the most adaptable of its type, allowing them to rangefrom habitats including tropical forests, grasslands, and even up in the slopesof the Andes Mountains.
Furthermore, the ocelot was found in the Lower RioGrande Valley along the shrubs outside the river. The ocelot ranges from 22-40 inches in lengthand use their short and thick fur, that span from a tannish-yellow color to areddish grey, to protect themselves from the dangerous environment. Its fur ismarked with black spots and stripes, making them very similar to bobcat. Theyhave long tails with black rings around them, and sharply-pointed teeth to bitedown on their preys. This species is considered a carnivore amongst its victims.Although rodents make up more than 50% of their diet, ocelots hunt other typesof food like birds, fish, rabbits, lizards, and snakes at night. Fun fact aboutthe ocelot is that it pertains a characteristic that is not seen in mosttypical cats.
Ocelots enjoy water, considerably being excellent swimmers in abig body of water like the Rio Grande. Unfortunately, the ocelot species hasdeclined over the past 40 years. Last recorded, there was only about 50 ocelotsleft in the United States, all residing in South Texas. This was being causedby the loss of habitat, creating a decrease in native vegetation and makingthem expand their territories in search for food and shelter. The closer theygot to human developments, they began to get hunted for their fur and killed bycars as they made their way to the roads. Thankfully, the U.S.
Fish andWildlife Service did their best to preserve the species by taking them into arefuge where their type would be restored and helped.
