The KKK had many targets and people they opposed during their reign of terror. The author of “Ku Klux Klan (KKK)” Odul Celep, states, “Known to be a paramilitary organization, the KKK terrorized blacks and civil rights activists with terrorist tactics and violence, such as lynchings, shootings, whippings, burnings, midnight raids, acid brandings, tar-and-featherings, kidnappings, torture, and castrations”. This quote shows the extremely hateful and harmful things this group has done to their supposed opposition. Historically, African american people were the first and primary targets of the KKK. Nonetheless, Jews, Catholics, socialists, communists, American Indians, Asians, homosexuals, and immigrants have also happened to be on the long list of targets in the organization.

The KKK collects funding from affiliate dues and the sales of their Klans appurtenances (Combs 8). The bulk of their members held regular jobs and simply donate a big amount of their salary towards the organization. Klan members tended to be lower and middle-class Caucasians. At its pinnacle in the 1920s, it was estimated that the KKK  had approximately 4 million members.

There were chapters in states ranging from Maine to Ohio to Oregon. The organization also had some strength in Midwestern states, especially Indiana (Lansford 5).
