The Selective Service, otherwise known as the draft, is an agency that holds information on possible military cadets, except womens. Presently, women are not allowed to sign up for a draft, but this is unfair and needs to be changed. A gender neutral draft will broaden the image of women, fully allow women in the military, and the front lines isn’t the only position in the draft.     Stereotypes for women have been around for ages, but it is still present in today’s world. For example, women are expected to be emotional, while men are seen to be self-confident and aggressive. At home, women would take care of the children, cook, and clean the home. Many people are quick to assume that teachers and nurses are positions for women.

If women are allowed to submit their names for the draft, then it will put gender equality on new tracks that this country has yet to see. As a nation, we are telling women that we expect the same selflessness, determination, heroism, and grit from them as we do from men. From hearing and expecting this, women might have the confidence to act on their dreams and ambitions. (“Gender Identity & Roles | Feminine Traits & Stereotypes.”)    In January 2016, women took a step closer to breaking gender roles, The Defense Department lifted all gender-based restrictions on military service. The historic change will clear the way for women to serve alongside men in combat arms units.

Defense Secretary, Ash Carter, decision came to be because a recommendation from the Marine Corps that suggested to keep some jobs closed to women. In contrast, the Army leaders recommended opening all combat arms jobs to women. “While the Marine Corps asked for a partial exception in some areas such as infantry, machine gunner, fire support reconnaissance and others, we are a joint force, and I have decided to make a decision which applies to the entire force,” Carter said at a Pentagon press briefing Thursday. “The important factor in making my decision was to have access to every American who could add strength to the joint force,” he said.

In effect, Carter’s decision will open to women about 220,000 jobs in all, or about 10 percent of the entire active and reserve force. Most of those jobs are in Army and Marine Corps infantry and armor units. (“All Combat Jobs Open to Women in the Military.”)The Selective Service is only one of the few reasons why women are still seen as unqualified counterparts.

However, the argument now is that women are not seen as qualified. Considering that there are women who have already volunteered to serve our country, the argument that women can not fight is invalid. This viewpoint still allows there to be prejudice toward women in the military. Women are not even seen as an equal member of our country to sign up for the draft. Women are perfectly able to go into war. Men and women already fight alongside each other in combat, so women should be required to sign up for the draft within a month after their eighteenth birthday as men do. (“Pro/Con: Should Women Have to Register for Selective Service?”)A draft doesn’t mean that soldiers will be dropped into enemy territory or put right on the front lines.

The military needs doctors, lawyers,  IT professionals, and intelligence analysts. They need human resource specialists, linguists, and logisticians. These jobs don’t require an unusual  amount of strength or any hazardous work. Just brains and effort.

These jobs can be taken by both men and women alike. Also, if  young men are called to fill a temporary position, even if it doesn’t fit their standards or qualities, there is no justifiable reason that the same sacrifice shouldn’t be asked of women. Women should also be allowed to shoulder similar burdens that men go throughout their military careers. That’s one reason the Navy and the Marine Corps are now reviewing job titles to consider making them gender-neutral.

(“9 Reasons Women Should Have to Register for the Draft.”)In the workplace and beyond, we share responsibilities with men. Selective Service registration should be no different. A gender neutral draft will broaden the image of women, fully allow women in the military, and there are different positions in the draft.
