The country is a mixtureof religions and ethnicities with profoundly engrained traditions influenced bySri Lanka’s past history. The majority of the population is Sinhalese, butthere are also communities of Tamils, Muslims, Burghers and Malays.
Anuradhapura is thegreatest monastic city of the ancient creation that dates from the middle ofthe 5th century B.C. Today Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renovatedmonuments, restored structures, well-preserved ruins and historical sites wherethe archaeological diggings are still being continued. The pride ofAnuradhapura is the ancient stupas and ancient reservoirs.
Yala National Park is oneof six national parks of the island. In the other hand there is three wildlifesanctuaries in the vicinity of Yala. Yala hosts a variety of ecosystems rangingfrom tropical deciduous forest to freshwater and marine wetlands. It is one ofthe important bird and biodiversity areas in Sri Lanka. Yala shelters 215 birdspecies including six rare species of Sri Lanka. The number of mammal speciesthat has been documented from the park is 41. Nuwara Eliya is the townat the highest elevation in Sri Lanka and its tallest peak ‘Piduruthalagala’ canbe seen from here.
The city was created by the British in the nineteenthcentury. It was also known as ‘little England’ Nuwara Eliya is a popularholiday resort for Sri Lankans and travelers due to its cool climate and old-fashionedcolonial feel. Sigirya centered on a massive rock rising from groundto 200 meters. Sigiriya’s location is one of significant natural beauty andhistorical interest. Sigiriya itself is essentially a secured royal capital of the fifth century. It has apalace on top of the rock.
