When the cubs are ready to come out of the den, they weigh twenty to twenty-five pounds. Now their mother will make sure that they’re safe and teach them how to hunt the seals and fish that they like to eat.

Young Polar Bears

Polar bears like Polly have a life stage called the sub-adult stage. This is a life stage that occurs after a polar bear leaves her mother and before she can have babies of her own. During this time, polar bear siblings often share food and live together.

Female polar bears like Polly are able to have their own babies around age 4 or 5, while male polar bears like her brother are not ready to have babies until age 6.

Adult Polar Bears

When they’re fully grown adults, male polar bears can weigh as much as 990 pounds and female polar bears, like Polly, can weigh between 300 and 600 pounds!Time is flying and Polly is now 5 years old. It’s hard to believe it’s time for Polly to start having cubs of her own. She makes a den for herself in October or November, and that’s where she will stay the whole time she is pregnant. These dens are sometimes called maternity dens.

The cubs are usually born in November or December, and they stay in the den until March or April, when they come out and learn how to hunt. Polly’s cubs will stay with her until they are about two-and-a-half years old, at which time they will enter their sub-adult life stage.

Life Expectancy

A life expectancy is the age that an animal can live to be. Polar bears in the wild usually live to be between 15 and 18 years old, but some can be as old as 30 years old. Some bears that live in captivity, where they are safe from weather and predators, can live to be as old as 40.

Since Polly lives in the wild, she’ll probably live to be between 15 and 18 years old.

Lesson Summary

A life cycle is the series of changes that a living thing goes through in its life. Polar bear babies are called cubs, and they are born in groups of up to three cubs. When they leave their mothers, but are still not ready to have cubs of their own, they enter a sub-adult stage.

Adult polar bears can live to be 15-18 years old in the wild.
