The Chairman of the state school board has asked you (a consultant on health and wellness), to write an informative piece about the recent changes to the breakfast and lunch program. The information will be used improve nutrition and health. The content will turn into a brochure describing the four major issues: economic situation, special needs, health of the population being served, process and benefits of the program. He asked you to include two visuals to illustrate the issues. We know that there are several ways to help children, and one great way is to ensure they are properly fed.
The hearts and minds of children cannot be fully engaged in learning, unless their bodies are content and ready to learn. When children come to school hungry, they are rushing though hectic schools lunch periods, or when they become restless because there is “no time” for recess, their learning abilities will be challenged. Poor nutrition and the lack of physical activities for today’s youth are major contributing factors to obesity and chronic diseases. A study conducted by Y. C. Wang et al. in 2006 found that the spike in childhood obesity between 1988 and 2002 could have been prevented by an average reduction of 110-165 calories per day.It also affects cognitive skills, behaviors, and the ability to concentrate.
School plays an important role in providing healthy environments for learning and good health. This is why we need nutrition and health programs: to support a readiness to learn. In today’s society, most families’ hectic lifestyles relies heavily on fast foods places restaurants to feed their families. For the most part, eliminates all thought of a nutritional meal for the family. It also leaves very little time for physical activities.
Such lifestyles have truly played and major role in the health of our Nation’s children. So many students come to school complaining of stomach aches, while others sip sodas and munch on fatty foods and sweets in place of healthy choice snacks. This speaks volumes on about the nutritional facts considered. Now you see so many issues with obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease risks, and poor bones health, – as well as the mental, emotional and social consequences these problems pose. La Rochefoucauld once said: “To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art,” thus pointing to the actuality of a call toward reorientation of the people between eating and health.
A healthy school nutrition environment encompasses more than just food and beverage choice in the lunch line. It will also; include appropriate meal scheduling, and serving times, food and beverage fund-raisers, physical activity and a generally message about eating and physical activity that students receive at school. Schools environments will promote healthy eating behaviors and active lifestyles if students and there their families are committed to : 1. Nutrition and physical activity, 2.
High quality school meals, 3. other healthy food options, 4. A pleasant eating experience, 5.Nutrition education, and 6. Marketing consistent health messages.
Schools should try to influence a lot more students to eat healthy and have an active physical activity pattern. When a school is fully committed to a healthy nutrition environment, every member of the education team makes it their there number one priority every day to be healthy. To get started follow a few helpful steps that can help you in the process of improving the nutrition environment in your school: 1.
create a team and get buy-in, 2. conduct a needs assessment, 3. develop an action plan, 4.
put the plain in action,5. evaluate, and 6 communicate. Updating national nutrition standards for snack foods and beverages sold in schools could go a long way in helping students maintain a healthy weight and increase food service revenue. Proper nutrition is the very thing we need now. Our existence will mean a lot as well as our goals if we can utilize this. We are challenged not to be bound by the modern world. All the products of science and technology will mean nothing if we die at 20 or 30.
It will not give us the nutrition that we need to avoid H1N1 and kill every virus, disease, and infection in the world. It will just catch our attention, pull us to its deepest attraction, and we are done. We’ll be dust and ashes in the split of time, in the blink of an eye. If only we can set aside every earthly distraction and pay close attention to health and life, then every man can wake up each day facing the new hope of the golden sun and providing the wellspring of progress in the world. If only we can set aside every earthly distraction and pay close attention to health and life, then every man can wake up each day facing the new hope of the golden sun and providing the wellspring of progress in the world.
