Northwest Territories has many diamond mines. In fact about 133 million carats of rough diamonds a year.
There are important jobs behind getting those diamonds. The first job is miners and producers. This job includes people who mine rough diamonds and sort them. The second job is cutters and polishers. This job is where the diamonds are cut, cleaned, and polished. During this process, the diamonds lose 50-60 percent of their weight.
Lastly, the final process is jewelry manufacturers as well as retailers. They use the diamond to create the jewelry or goods then sell them. Companies like Tiffany, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Chanel. However, there are almost 250,000 jewelry retailers worldwide. Diamond mining is one of the many important industries in the north.
Seal clubbing isn’t clubbing with seals but an illegal hunting game. In Canada, it is illegal to hunt newborn harp seals and young hooded seals. These are the seals with white fluffy coats and the blue-skinned seals. At the age of 12-14 days, the seals are called ragged-jacket and can be hunted. Why do we hunt seals? As adorable as they are, aboriginals use the skin to create waterproof jackets and boots. The fur is most often used for fur coats. Sailors also use the skin to make tobacco pouches.
Luckily the number of seal kills has gone down. In 2007 it was as high as 82,800 however, in 2010 it was 67,000. Eight years later the number is much less and I hope it continues to deteriorate.
The Inuits, also known as Eskimos which came from the Native word “eater of raw meat”. However, we no longer call them Eskimos and therefore out of respect we call them Inuit. Inuit stands for “the people”.
The Inuit believe that all living things have a spirit. The Inuit eat land mammals such as caribou, polar bear, and muskox. They occasionally eat birds and bird eggs. If they go ice fishing they catch saltwater fish and freshwater fish. This includes sculpin, arctic cod, arctic char, capelin, and lake trout. South Recently in 2017 college teachers went on strike for job security. If a teacher doesn’t have job security it means they would constantly be switched around with no say in it. Every day you could have a new teacher.
They wanted to ensure that this wouldn’t happen and instead, they could go to the same building, same room, with the same set of students every day. This did not only affect the teachers but more importantly the college students. Students attending these colleges had to work from home. This meant that they had to complete work without lectures and without resources like books. Often the books were needed to complete their work thus, this was a large issue.
In the end, teachers got what they wanted and as of the beginning of December, they now have job security. In Ontario, we have Cootes Paradise. It’s a marsh, a shallow, heavily vegetated wetland where many animals come to spawn.
There are many plants that grow in the middle of the marsh. Invasive species such as carp and goldfish are harming the marsh. They dig up the roots at the bottom of the marsh to look for food, however, this mucks up the water and stop the sun from reaching to other plant life at the bottom. It is also semi-polluted. It was made to prevent carp, goldfish and other invasive species to stop polluting the marsh, known as Cootes Paradise.
Fish swim into a cage where they can get in but not out as long as they are wider the 5 cm, and then they pull the cage up twice a day and sort the fish into 2 groups, Invasive species, and native species. They weigh the native fish and send them into cootes, and reject the carp back into Hamilton. Manna grass is also a problem because it lives in the same kind of conditions as cattails bullrush and wild rice. What the manna grass does is it grows in the same places as the native marsh plants and it smothers them because of how many more seeds they put out causing them to take over. The reason they haven’t been destroyed or kept under control is that they are a very sharp grass and the animals don’t eat them because the grass is too sharp for their tongues so they don’t eat it. Garlic Mustard is another problem because it releases a toxin into the soil that only it is immune to so all the plants around it die and it grows because the toxin doesn’t harm them which as It spreads it releases more toxin in the new place it grows killing more and more plants. It is also invasive which means it takes over any plant near it.
To stop both these invasive plant species they are putting a black tarp over manna grass to bake it so it dies, and uprooting garlic mustard. Toronto. In Canada we fish for three types of fish, the first is groundfish. This means cod, pollock, haddock, halibut, and redfish. Secondly, we fish for pelagic fish. This includes salmon, herring, mackerel, tuna, and caplin.
Lastly, we fish for shellfish. These are shrimp, lobsters, oysters, scallops, and mussels. The fishing industry employs 14%, and if you compare that to forestry, oil and gas extraction, mining and other industries in the primary sector. With these many people working in the industry, it brings in a lot of money. On small vessels, fisherman make daily approximately $200 to $250 per day.
This varies from companies, crew sizes, and location. Some fishing crews share can produce $40,000 or $50,000 for a couple of months. No one knows the exact number but there are roughly 69,530 Acadians living in eastern Canada. Being descendants from France, they speak French and are Catholic. West Lumber in BC is a very large industry. So large that it creates roughly 145,000 jobs in BC. One in 16 jobs in BC relies on the forestry industry.
Even though we don’t see the difference that all the lumber harvesting makes its happening and about 477,000 acres of BC is forested annually. Before companies are allowed to begin chopping down trees they have to create a plan. Almost like a blueprint they identify where they will be harvesting the lumber on a map.
