Materials Needed

  • My Teacher Fried My Brains by Bruce Coville (individual copies for student use)
  • Story plot diagram graphic organizers (one per pair of students)


Note: This lesson plan is designed for students that have read My Teacher Fried My Brains by Bruce Coville.

  • To review the book, have each student read the My Teacher Fried My Brains Summary.
  • After reading ‘Alien Teacher?’ and ‘Who is the Alien’ discuss:
    • What were some of the things that happened to Duncan in the story?
  • After reading ‘Brain-Frying Experiments’ ask:
    • In the story, whose brains get ‘fried?’ How does this happen? What happens to that person as a result of the frying?
    • Who is Poot? What is his special talent?
  • Now read the rest of the lesson, discuss:
    • Who is the alien in the school? How does Duncan find out?
    • How does the story end?
    • Did this story change your view of Duncan as a bully? Why or why not?
    • What do you think will happen next?
  • Have students complete the quiz to assess understanding.

Plot Diagram

  • Introduce the story plot map using the video What is a Plot Diagram?
  • Divide students into pairs and give each pair a copy of a blank plot diagram graphic organizer.

  • Tell students to discuss the book with their partner in order to identify each of the listed parts of the plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.
  • As students work, circulate through the pairs providing assistance, as needed.
  • When all the students have finished, meet back as a group and discuss the parts of the plot to be sure they are all in agreement.

    If they do not agree, discuss that plot point as a group to help everyone come to a consensus.

Lesson Extensions

  • Encourage students to write their own sequel to this book, then compare it to the actual sequel.
  • Provide students with additional practice in identifying narrative plot structure using the plot diagram.
