Mining is an activity of extracting different minerals
that could affect lots of living things especially those that are near from
where the mining is being performed. One of those living things that are being
affected are those who are in the water area, also known as the aquatic
biodiversity. According to Helfrich, al., biodiversity is not just the
richness of species but it is also their genetic variety and habitats wherein
these plants and animals exist. And according to them, aquatic biodiversity is
the rich and brilliant diversity of plants and animals that exist in watery
habitats. Species and plants that lived in water areas are most likely to be
affected when mining is performed. According to Younger, P. and
Wolkersdorfer, C., mining approximately
affects the water environment, but the impacts could also be beneficial.
However, mining viewed as one of the most essential activity that can contribute
more in the industry. But mining has also the bad impacts not just the good
impacts specifically in aquatic biodiversity. According to Karmakar,
H.N. (2012), there are lots of impact of
mining towards ground and surface waters. Those impacts of mining include
lowering of water table, pollution, physical and chemical in balances, and
effects on hydrological cycle. Based on the study of Kamakar, H.N. (2012) about
the impact of mining on ground and surface waters, mining can cause the species
to die especially in water areas. Aquatic biodiversity were usually affected by
mining activities. Like the waste that comes from mining activities, it can
directly cause negative effects to those species that lives in water areas. In mining, there are different metals found even heavy
metals, and those metals can have an impact to the aquatic biodiversity. According
to the study of Tchounwou,
P. et al.,(2014), heavy metals are described
as metallic elements that have high density than water and it include
metalloids like arsenic. Based on the study of Kumari,
B. et al. (2016), Arsenic is found in water
areas and is one that affects the living things in water such as fishes. Fishes
are directly affected by the pollution on aquatic ecosystem. However, there are
lots of heavy metals that could affect the aquatic biodiversity. In the study
of Afshan,
S. et al. (2013), the effects of different
heavy metals were stated such as Chromium, Cadmium, Zinc, and Lead. According
to their study, these heavy metals can cause lots of damage to some aquatic
life and they found out that these metals were present in fishes. Mining have lot of effects in the aquatic biodiversity
particularly if it is illegally practised by individuals. This illegal mining
includes small-scale mining and this mining usually viewed informally performed
by group of people. However, Tom-Dery,
D. et al. (2012) stated that small-scale
mining brings some benefits but this also brings negative impacts to the
environment. Small scale mining does have great good impacts to the environment
and industry. Though, it brings bad impacts but it’s been observed or viewed as
an important thing for the environment.  

In aquatic biodiversity, many species existed. Species
from water areas are most likely to be affected by mining activities. Every individual
could benefit on mining activities but mining can cause destruction on the
environment. However, miners should mine minerals to manufacture different
products. Mining cause bad effects particularly on aquatic biodiversity. But we
can find some effective ways that could make many lives safe from mining
activities like inventing new technological machinery and avoid doing illegal
