IntroductionA chief midwife has a role that evolves continuously and is always influenced by the environment of the clinic and by many other local challenges. A chief midwife must be ready and prepared to respond and manage health care needs in order to achieve reduction of morbidity and mortality by formulating and developing evidence-based policies that encapsulate a vision with integrated people-centered services for effective and efficient midwifery workforce management.Moreover, she must support her partners’ effort to assess the gap between the need for a healthy workforce, and the population’s demand for health services (WHO, 2015). This multitasked position needs a person who has strong managerial, organizational and leading skills. Managerial skills help the chef midwife in her good planning, by setting the appropriate goals for her team and evaluating her teams’ effectiveness.
On the other hand, organizational skills will help her in the identification of problems that may appear, in order to achieve a fast and effective solution, even under the most challenging conditions. Her leading skills will help her not only being successful while working, interacting and communicating with patients and people in different situations but will mostly help her being able to work effectively with the staff at different levels, by building stuff’s support from the lowest highest level of the clinic.All of the above, in combination with each chief midwife’s personal qualities|, such as vision, ethics, communicational skills, responsibility, and motivation, will create the profile of an effective or of a non-effective manager or leader.
What skills do you need to develop in order to provide effective leadership? A leader can be defined simply as ‘a person who leads or commands a group, organization’ but this includes both formal and informal roles and in practice, leaders are made by circumstances by making people follow them at the right moment. This is the reason why being a leader is different from being a manager. As it is widely said ‘leaders do the right thing, and managers do things right’. The main difference between a leader and a manager is that the leader is expected to create and communicate a compelling vision, usually associated with change.One of the most important aspects of leadership is that every leader is different, depending on the different personality and circumstances. However, a leader who learns how to use a wide variety of styles and models of leadership has always an advance against others by finding the balance between business foresight, performance, and character.
A chief midwife must have vision, courage, integrity, humility and focus along with the ability to plan strategically and catalyze cooperation amongst her team. The first value that all the gathered executives agree upon for their company is integrity. They all agree on the importance of complete honesty in everything they do, both internally and externally.The core of integrity is truthfulness and as Zig Ziglar said “With integrity, you have nothing to fear, since you have nothing to hide. With integrity, you will do the right thing, so you will have no guilt.
” Integrity requires that you always tell the truth, to all people, in every situation and for this reason the chef midwife should be honest to the midwife who asks to be transferred the delivery room. Truthfulness is the foundation quality of the trust that is necessary to the success of any organisation.Moreover, a chief midwife must have the ability to predict what will happen next, which is the strategic planning and what alternatives she has.
According to Jack Welch “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.” This quality of vision changes a “transactional manager” into a “transformational leader”, while a manager gets the job done, great leaders tap into the emotions of their employees.Courage is also a very important quality of a good leader and a chief midwife must be willing to take risks in the achievement of her goals. The chief midwife, in order to be more effective as a leader, must be strong and decisive but also humble. Humility doesn’t mean that someone is weak but it means that she has the self-confidence and self-awareness to recognize the value of others without feeling threatened. The chief midwife should be willing to admit her mistakes and recognise that she may not have all the answers. As Larry Bossidy refers “The more you can contain your ego, the more realistic you are about your problems.
You learn how to listen, and admit that you don’t know all the answers. You exhibit the attitude that you can learn from anyone at any time. Your pride doesn’t get in the way of gathering the information you need to achieve the best results. It doesn’t keep you from sharing the credit that needs to be shared. Humility allows you to acknowledge your mistakes.” A chief midwife must always have strategic planning and the ability to look ahead, anticipate with some accuracy what will happen after her decision and how this will affect the postnatal care unit in the next months or years, and how this will affect the hole organisation.
As Henry Mintzberg said “Strategy is not the consequence of planning, but the opposite: it’s the starting point.” The starting point of the chief midwife in our case is consider deeply the fact that she has a midwife who is not anymore interested in her section and in a will she will probably be ineffective, but she should also focus on the needs of the company and the situation.As a leader the chief midwife should focus on results and strengths, which means what she must focus on things that must be achieved by herself, by the midwife, and by the hole company.For this reason the chief midwife will have to focus the strengths of the midwife and of the strengths of the organisation, which will help her achieve a balance between the things that the company does best in satisfying an effective employer.
