I was in 5th grade when Ifirst used a computer and the very first application I opened was MSPAINT justto create simple drawings apparently it was the only thing, at that time, I wasbeing taught in my school. Being immensely captivated by that machine, I kepton thinking how this thing actually works. When I found out the sheer amount ofapplications that this machine had though, I was awestruck. By the time I finishedmy schooling, I gained much about computers, both through my own research andalso through school. My keen interest in Computers and learning something newin deep, when combined with my inner desire to reach a degree of excellence inevery piece of work I perform, I shaped my choice of Computer Engineering asthe field for my career.
I have always developedthe interest in the areas of studies involving science, math and analyticalthinking. Apart from my regular curriculum subjects being taught in my school,I have also taken part in various science competitions. After seeing myexcellence in terms of science and mathematics, my school teachers selected meto appear for the “Dr. Homi Bhabha Young Scientist Examination” conducted byThe Mumbai Science Teachers’ Association and was also among the top meritstudents.After my schooling, Ifinished my three years of the Diploma course in the Computer Technology fieldfrom Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Polytechnic. The purpose of which was to bettermy understanding of programming skills, getting used in a diverse field ofsubjects such as Networking, Operating Systems, Data structures, andMicroprocessors. The more I learned, the more I was drawn to it.
Since I had developed a fondness towards that subject, I taught them,everything in detail and in a lucid manner. Not only I scored the highest markson that subject, but also every single person I taught to, secured more than 60marks (first class) in that subject. I’ve never been prouder in my life.Besides theoretical work,I gained practical knowledge in Computer Science through internship programsand various project works.
My final year Diploma project titled ‘Image to TextConverter – Optical character recognition (OCR)’, a standalone Desktopapplication, which could easily extract text written on an image grouped underany format. Visual Basic .Net programming language was used to build up thisapplication.
Another Academic project I completed was a ‘Merchandising Firm WebSite’. A static website of a Merchandising company designed in HTML with CSS,to display various products and help extract product-linked data. My B.
E.project titled ‘Semantic Web Search Engine’. My team and I developed an’intelligent’ web search engine that semantically searches pertinent web pagesacross a finite set of web pages and displays the most relevant result on thetop. I have likewise published a technical report on ‘Semantic Web SearchEngine’ in International Journal of Engineering Research & Technology,IJERT. It not only helped me hone my programming skills but also applying myexpertise to extract the best amidst my peers.
After graduation, I startedas Management Trainee in ‘NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited’, a privatefirm that provide e- Governance solution to Indian Government.While I was following myundergrad program, terms like Data Science and Machine Learning were not undermy radar. I was under the constant impression that Designing of systems,Implementation of software products and Testing of applications make upcomputer engineering. In the night one day, I was looking around for a newheadphone on the Amazon Shopping App. Being a gadget enthusiast, the app wasfilled with recommendations for a range of electronic products. With so preciserecommendations made my search for new headphone facile.
Moreover, I realizedit was something else than mere and static programming, which increased mycuriosity for learning something new. It was Machine Learning, a scientificdiscipline in the field of Artificial Intelligence, which enables Amazon to usedata to predict and recommend products to users what they may purchase.I believe that data isthe heart of every business operation and its importance in the process ofdecision-making and innovation is set to increase more over the coming years.Converting a raw data to refined data and depicting a story out of it via DataVisualization techniques have always been the effective tool to change howsomeone makes a decision or takes an action. Going deeper into this conceptmade me so enthralled, as a consequence, I resolved to explore Data Sciencefield more deeply. Since then, I have sought to improve data science skills byworking on data science tool such as Scikit-learn project, having insights ofDescriptive and inferential statistics and learning new Machine learningtechniques.
Currently, I am pursuing an online free course of Machine Learningprovided by Udacity. My hunger for knowledge has grown so high that it led meto pursue an MS in Data Science program offered by the New York University.I find the Data Scienceprogram at the New York University more appealing as this program focuses on developmentof new methods for data science and also let students customize the way ofimplementing methods for working with data, which will indeed help me to attainextensive depth with respect to data science concepts. Iwould fully utilize the resources that the New York University provides, as Iam particularly interested in the realworld research projects. The Centre for Data Science (CDS), aresearch centre at NYU, organize summer internship program for students whichwill integrate them to work in real world research projects is exactly the kindof opportunity I am looking for, as I could totally see myself working in thoseresearch projects day and night.
