Hip-hop is a subculture which was invented in the late1970s in New York City and The Bronx in the USA.
Hip-hop has a lot of different types, such as Rap, Mcing, beatboxing, breakdancing, Djing and a lot of more. The most popular genre of Hip-hop culture nowadays is Rap music, which also has a lot of types. In this essay, I will tell you about how Rap music was invented, about the most popular rap legends and types of rap. ?On August 11, 1973, in the Bronx, New York history was about to be made.
DJ Kool Herc (now known as the first DJ & founding, father of hip-hop) & his sister Cindy began hosting back to school parties in the recreation room of their building. It was these gatherings that would spark the beginning of a new culture we know today as Hip-Hop. One night during DJ Kool Herc’s set he tried something new he called “merry go round”.
He used two turntables playing the same break beat section of the James Brown record “clap your hands”. When one turntable would finish playing the section he would switch to the other turntable and play the same section. This allowed him to extend that section of the song as long as he wanted. This technique is now referenced to as looping and is used by record producers in almost every beat. As DJ Kool Herc continued to do more parties he realized that speaking on the mic was just as important to keeping a party live as DJing was. In order to keep up with the demands of the crowd, he reached out to his good friend Coke La Rock to be the first dedicated MC of these parties.
During one of these parties Coke La Rock spit his very first bar, ” There’s not a man that can’t be thrown, not a horse that can’t be rode, a bull that can’t be stopped, there’s not a disco that I Coke La Rock can’t rock”. This one bar made Coke La Rock the very first rapper in Hip-Hop and birthed a new genre of music we know today as Rap music.?The most important part of the history of Rap music was the “golden age”. Hip-hop’s “golden age” is a name given to a period in mainstream hip-hop, usually cited as being a period varying in time frames during the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, said to be characterized by its diversity, quality, innovation, andinfluence. There were various types of subject matter, while the music was experimental. The artists most often associated with the phrase are N.W.
A, Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, De La Soul, Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, the Jungle Brothers, and more.?The golden age of hip-hop is often associated with the East Coast – however, that doesn’t mean that West Coast rappers were slouches.
In fact, West Coast rap took the world by storm when it first rose to commercial and critical prominence at the end of the 1980s. Fierce and funky, West Coast rap was defined by lyrics that drew attention to the realities of west side street violence and drugs that not only caught on in the undergroundbut also achieved widespread acclaim as well. Mostly through the prolific work of California rappers, West Coast rap inspired a new sound and a new generation of West Coast rappers who continue to abide by the ethos set forth by the genre’s initial artists.
So, who are the best West Coast rappers? Any respectable West Coast rappers list has to include legends like Tupac Shakur, members of N.W.A., (Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and Dr. Dre), Snoop Dogg, Mac Dre, Warren G, Nate Dogg, and more recently, Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q. No matter how you cut it, West Coast rappers dramatically shaped how pop music sounds, even if that wasn’t initial intention. West Coast rap is a powerful, important genre that remains widely respected inmusic history. Tupac Amaru Shakur was a highly influential, best-selling American hip-hop artist, considered by many to be one of the greatest and most legendary rappers of all time.
Most of Tupac’s songs concerned growing up around violence and hardships in ghettos, racial inequality and sometimes his feuds with fellow rappers in the United States. A recent VIBE magazine poll showed him to be rated the greatest rapper of all time. Tupac Shakur was born into a world of activism and struggle. His mother, Afeni, was a leader in the Black Panther movement, a member of the “Panther 21” group that was arrested in 1969. While pregnant, she acted as her own attorney in the trial; she was eventually acquitted of all charges, and Tupac was born just weeks after her release. He was a Shakespeare fan and from age of 12, his dream was becoming an actor. Later Tupac was signed to Interscope Records by Tom Whalley and his first solo album, 2Pacalypse Now, arrived a few months later, generating both acclaim and controversy. Though the single “Brenda’s Got a Baby” demonstrated his empathy and morals, the album’s unsparing examinations of street violence and police harassment.
His next album which was released in 1993, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., including the hits “Keep Ya Head Up” and “I Get Around,” became his first platinum release.
His next album “Me against the world” reached number one on the charts. Things got even bigger in 1996 with All Eyez on Me, Tupac’s best-selling album, which spawned five singles, including two Number One hits, “California Love” and “How Do U Want It.” At the height of his phenomenal success, Tupac’s life was cut short on September 13, 1996, when he was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas at the age of 25.
Despite the tragedy, Tupac’s songs continue living in our hearts forever. ?Other legends of Rap music are the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.
A. West Coast gangsta rap icons N.W.A. formed in Compton in 1987, a West Los Angeles supergroup put together by ambitious drug dealer Eazy-E, production titan Dr.
Dre, gifted writer Ice Cube and local club operator MC Ren. O’Shea “Ice Cube” Jackson, born and raised in a two-parent, middle-class home in South Central and always more interested in music and books than in gangs he met Andre “Dr. Dre” Young, who shared Cube’s passion for writing rap songs. The two started writing for Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, a drug dealer who started Ruthless Records with his profits. Eazy needed material for a group he’d signed to the label, HBO. When HBO rejected Cube and Dre’s song “Boyz-n-the-Hood,” about the South Central town of Compton, Eazy-E decided to record the song himself and the three started working together as Niggaz With Attitude (N.
W.A).?The next rapper is Marshal Matter well known as Eminem (a.k.a.
Slim Shady). He born in 1972, 12th of October in Kansas City Missouri, USA. Later he moved to the most dangerous cities in USA, Detroit. He was living in the trailer with his mom. He was really bad at school, he dropped out of it in ninth grade. He was the first white rapper who changed the game and proved that Rap music is not only for black people but for everyone. He was always participating in freestyle rap battles (about which I will tell a bit later) and he was always winning. His first nickname was “M-and-M”.
Later he changed it into M in M and from that came the nickname Eminem. The Slim Shady EP opened many doors, the most notable of them being a contract with Interscope Records. After Eminem came in second at the 1997 Rap Olympics MC Battle in Los Angeles, Interscope head Jimmy Iovine sought out the rapper, giving the EP to Dr.
Dre, who proved eager to work with Eminem. They quickly cut Em’s Interscope debut in the fall of 1998 — during which time Marshall reconciled with Kim and married her — and The Slim Shady LP appeared early in 1999, preceded by the single “My Name Is.” Both were instant blockbusters and Eminem turned into a lightning rod for attention, earning praise and disdain for his violent, satirical fantasias. Recently he uploaded new album after a very long period of time which call “Revival”. This album showed the worst results from all the works of Eminem. The next rapper is Notorious B.I.G.
He is American hip-hop star, also known as Biggie Smalls, he was born as Christopher George Latore Wallace on May 21, 1972, in Brooklyn, New York. Biggie, or “The Notorious B.I.G,” as he’d later become known, experienced a rough childhood—at an early age, he was surrounded by drug addicts and dealers. As a result, by his early teens, Biggie had joined the life that was all around him. “Hustlers were my heroes,” he once said.
“Everything happened on the strip I grew up in. It didn’t matter where you went, it was all in your face.” At the age of 17, Biggie was arrested for selling crack and spent nine months in a North Carolina prison before making bail. As he navigated his young, uncertain life, Biggie started making music.
He hooked on with a crew called the “Old Gold Brothers” and began experimenting on his own.He becomes really successful from a commercial point of view. He made his way from street to the big radio stations and a lot of concerts from all around the world. One of the most important part in his career was a friendship with Tupac Amaru Shakur and beef with him. Beef is when two hip-hop artists are arguing and ready to kill each other, that what they have done(says the news, but nobody proved that information). Well, before they started beefing, 2Pac and Biggie were actually quite close. At the time, they were the 2 most popular rappers in the United States, doing the biggest numbers regarding record sales.
Tupac probably thought that Biggie arranged an assassination attempt for him in order to eliminate him and then claim the throne of the biggest rapper in the US.Right after the shooting, 2Pac went to prison and the moment he was released, he started consciously attacking Biggie in any way he could. This included making the famous diss record “Hit em Up”, where he completely demolished his opponent. After Tupac’s death,Notorious B.I.G was killed in the same manner.?Now I will tell you some famous Rap genres.
?The genre now I will talk about calls Pop rap or as I personally call hip pop is a genre that changes with the times. Almost a self-defining genre, pop rap is what becomes popular and is the sound that one would mainly hear when hearing mainstream rap on the radio. Currently, the sound that covers pop rap is a more dance-friendly or melodic that lyrically is usually does not have too much content or is too deep but is easy to move to. From this sub-genre, a lot of other sub-genresare born but are more identified by another name after they are not pop music anymore.?The next genre I will tell you about is called Trap rap.
By the way, it is my one of the most favorite Rap genres. The trap genre of rap can be described as a sound derived from crunk and southern hip-hop. The trap is a more aggressive or abrasive sounding rap that lyrically covers topics like drug usage/dealing, seeking success and wealth through less honorable ways.As it continues developing and incorporating electronic music sounds, it could potentially create another sub-genre. We see more and more EDM producers getting involved in hip-hop, and it really could escalate into something entirely new. ?The next genre is Gangsta rap. One of the more overall aggressive sounding genre in hip-hop both lyrically and in production using heavy beats.
Usually having violent themes it publically doesn’t have the best perceived view and used to mislead a casual listener of music into thinking all rap is alike during the 90’s when it comes best known. The genre has some of the most well-known artists of the whole genre of hip-hop, like, Snoop Dogg, Eazy-E, Dr.dre, Ice Cube and so on.?The next is Melodic rap.
While not yet officially recognized as a subgenre of hip-hop, melodic rap has been extremely influential over the past several years. Learning from the success of artists such as Drake, many rappers are now utilizing their vocal talents and singing on tracks with bass-heavy, futuristic production. This is the type of hip-hop that has thrived on SoundCloud and is playing a prominent role in the world of independent hip-hop. Rappers who sing are not new to hip-hop, but this subgenre has rapidly evolved to the point where many fans consider it to be their favorite type of music. ?The next one is Conscious rap, which I love the most. A genre for an artist who has a message they wish to share. Usually, its lyrics contain information about their view on some situation whether it’s political or social. Tracks from the genre often tell a story and moral about life or shares thoughts on troubles that are faced and are the most expressive and deep.
The beats used usually sounds smooth but can also be rough but tend to have a head-nodding rhythm rather than a beat to move feet. Its various identified traits are almost the complete opposite to pop rap especially since it’s the least commercialized genre making it the least mainstream and turning it underground.?Today Hip-hop(Rap) music is the most audible type of music in the world. It changed a lot, in terms of style, people started changing. People started listening to a more musical version of hip-hop, some people are happy about it while others want to return gold times of Hip-hop and old legends like Tupac, Notorious B.
I.G(Biggie Smalls), Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eazy-E and all others.
In conclusion, I want to say that nowadays people who love rap and say that it is fake nowadays. I want to say that there is no such thing as “true hip-hop” or”fake hip-hop”, it’s all hip-hop whether you like it or not.
