Harvard education professor Howard Gardner founded the theory of multiple intelligences in 1983. The theory differentiates intelligence into specific modalities instead of seeing intelligence as one general ability. Dr Gardner presented these eight intelligences as: Verbal/Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Visual/Spatial, Musical, Bodily/Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal and Naturalistic intelligence. He also stated that each person has a different capacity of each intelligence that can be expanded and developed by the individual himself. And as for children, each and every child has a different way to absorb information.
Therefore, parents should not be worried about their kids when they have difficulties in some subjects or classes.Even though there are unexpected similarities between all learners despite their age, children’s are way different than adults in the way they think, speak, receive and give information. Almost all teachers notice this major difference between the adults and the children because in teaching, the same approach will fail. Adults are expected to bring enormous pre-knowledge, while children tend to be as a blank page that you can fill with as much information as possible, due to their unlimited inquisitiveness. This essay discuss ways of using the multiple intelligences theory to make it beneficial for both parents and teachers to develop children’s learning process, And if the child’s own learning style and personality is figured, academic success will be assured. All parents should be observing their children and discovering what type of activities do they enjoy and learn most from, to be eventually aware of their child’s strengths and talents. As well as teachers.
After discovering that the child has a natural inclination towards reading or writing, first approach that can be used is letting him write your weekly grocery list, or to write letters to his relatives and to motivate him to describe every detail in his entire day. This will definitely develop his verbal/linguistic intelligence. “If a little girl has a lot of spatial problems (difficulty picturing things), but is terrific in English, she can learn math by putting everything into her own words” (Levine, 2002), a pediatrics professor at the University of North Carolina Medical School. The second intelligence is the ability to solve problems and recognize patterns and order. Which is logical/mathematical intelligence. Little learners who have a high capacity of this intelligence understands better and are able to deal with numbers, enjoys solving complex problems and asks a lot of questions.
Parents should enhance this ability by allowing the child to use the measuring tools while cooking or baking, or to compete him in logic-based games such as chess or checkers or any activity that will develop math and logic skills. Teachers as well can enhance the kid’s ability by giving him critical thinking activities, linear outlining and through the use of logical/sequential presentation of subject matter. Visual/spatial intelligence, a lot of children enjoy communicating through pictures and drawings. If you noticed this talent in your child, you should let him do activities like making cards for their loved ones. And whenever comes a situation where he needs to apologize, it is effective to let him draw an apology instead of writing it. Children with strength in the spatial intelligence are very imaginative. Teachers must provide charts, graphs, diagrams, videotapes and art activities.
Most of children have a vast amount of energy, but some learn best using their body. Kids with bodily/kinesthetic intelligence accept and learn by experience. Then as a parent, you should let your kid participate in activities such as running, swimming and jumping in order to increase their talents.
As a teacher, This intelligence must be fostered by touching, movement,”hands-on” activities, facial expressions and physical relaxation exercises. Moving to musical intelligence, it is the ability to comprehend and create musical pitches and tones. Therefore, As a parent of a boy who loves music, attend concerts and music performances with him, For the reason of his attraction to tone, rhythm and melody. Teachers may encourage growth in this area of intelligence by converting lessons that students needs to memorize into a song. Children with naturalistic intelligence enjoy classifying and categorizing diversified species, the flora and fauna of an environment. Therefore, they enjoy spending their time outdoor collecting leaves, catching insects and sorting them due to their strong bond with nature. Parents can nurture a love for nature by encouraging the child to spend more of his time outside playing instead of spending it using their electronic games. In addition, consider traveling to places where a child can meditate in nature such as zoos, forests and aquariums.
Interpersonal intelligence is simply understanding people and relationships. When you notice your kid is friendly with everyone and enjoys having conversations with his relatives or any stranger, whenever possible, involve your kid in group discussions. And as a teacher, turn any math or science problems into a group activity. Intrapersonal intelligence is the ability to understand one’s own thoughts and personality, to have a good relationship with the self.
Children who has this kind of intelligence knows themselves well, and whenever people criticises them, they don’t usually care. Due to their big love to themselves. Parents should enhance this area of intelligence by encouraging the child to think about how new experiences makes him feel and providing him many chances to explore himself very well. In School projects, teacher should ask an interpersonal intelligence kid about his opinion and emotions to this project. ”While Multiple Intelligences theory is consistent with much empirical evidence, it has not been subjected to strong experimental tests. .
. .Within the area of education, the applications of the theory are currently being examined in many projects. Our hunches will have to be revised many times in light of actual classroom experience” (Gardner, 1993, p. 33). Gardner here declares that there is no prove that there is an actual strong experimental facts. Learning style refer to understanding that every individual learns differently and separately from others. Parents and teachers should choose the right learning style for the children according to the personality spectrum and the multiple intelligences theory.
The Dunns (1993, 1999) define learning style as the way every learner concentrate, process and remember all sorts of academic content. Each learner has a should have a fundamental learning style that will rely on in studying for the exams.Dunn and Dunn (1993; Dunn & Griggs, 2003) sorted and listed study methods that young learners achieve highly if it had been chosen perfectly. Personality on the other hand, can guide you to your child’s suitable learning style.
if your childs is an organizer, thinker, giver, adventurer, there is a specific learning style for each personality kind. Personality and learning styles co-inside with one another, since they identify how a little learner processes data through their unique brain power. Using some tests to discover the child’s personality is available at a lot of websites. Figuring out the kid’s personality type should be not hard. In conclusion, the multiple intelligences theory helped and is still helping a lot of teachers and parents to improve their little learners abilities to study, comprehend and achieving high marks in their studies.
Even if there are no direct facts but the studies that tells if some teacher tried and did any experiment on the children. there will be significant difference between the traditional teaching approach and the multiple intelligences teaching approach. In the future, every educator hopes to see the multiple intelligences teaching approaches used in all schools and in all classroom, as well as parents.
This is the greatest way to achieve having a good and well educated child that will eventually be something very special in the future. To conclude this essay i’ve founded and sorted all types of little learners intelligences and the way it should be developed. In my opinion, using the multiple intelligences theory, personality spectrum, learning style is really important for the child to start his educational path.
Because me as myself suffered when i was a kid for not excusing me when i had some difficulties in some subjects and courses. While i had some other intelligences that were not appreciated. I wouldn’t hope to see this happening to any other child.
