Ethical Issues in Today’s Society Judith Berryan Ethics Introduction To agree or disagree with today’s ethical issues one must have morals, values and ethics of their own. For instance, abortion is a highly controversial topic. I for one do not believe in abortion, but can understand it in some circumstances.

Abortion is defined as any expulsion of an embryo or fetus before it is sufficiently developed to survive. (www. yourdictionary. com) Although abortion can be tracked way back in time, this subject is highly controversial still today.Medical technology has made abortion as safe as having a tooth extracted. Abortion is legal in the United States at anytime throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy. I feel in a case of rape, incest or a criminal act abortion should be an option for the woman. The woman has already gone through enough without the pain of having a child conceived out of a hateful act.

In all other cases, my theory is if you think you are old enough to have sex you should be ready and willing to face your decision.I feel that abortion used as a method of birth control is wrong and should not be allowed. This brings up other ethical decisions such as sex education for teenagers and parents not being afraid to discuss sex openly with their children. One of the more popular abortion cases was Roe vs. Wade on January 22, 1973. The aliases “Jane Roe” was used for Norma McCorvey, on whose behalf the suit was originally filed, alleging that the abortion law in Texas violated her constitutional rights and the rights of other women. Women’s Rights on Trial) One the same day another decision in the case of Doe vs. Bolton was read.

These decisions have created many other ethical debates, such as when does life begin. The ruling gave women the right of choice. In Washington State, where I reside, Initiative 120 was passed in November of 1991 stating that the state may not deny or interfere with a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion prior to viability of the fetus or to protect her life or health. This act is known as “The Reproductive Privacy Act. It is still a Class C Felony to perform an unauthorized abortion on a woman. A physician must make a good faith judgment as to the risk to the fetus or woman. No person or medical center (public or private) may be required to participate in performing the abortion if they object and no discrimination shall occur because of the refusal to participate.

(The Current Law on Abortion in Washington State ) According to the statistics available in 2000, 1. 2 million pregnancies were terminated by abortion in the United States. It also states that abortion is one of the most common surgical procedures in the United States. Only 2.

8% of these abortions were performed due to a risk to the mother’s health, while 3. 3% due to the fetus’ health. The other reasons given were to postpone child bearing, too young to parent, wants no more children, child would disrupt job or education, and relationship problems. (Abortion Statistics) I think this is terrible. If you do not want children, are not ready for children, or children would be a disruption to your life, prevent them by being responsible with your birth control.According to About.

com nearly half of the pregnancies each year are unintended. Women under 24 and under account for roughly 52% of the abortions performed each year, with 19% being teenagers. (Stacey) I feel that to be ethical in any situation one must be open to all sides of the issue. Not everything is black and white and right or wrong.

If everyone was more open to others beliefs, feelings, situations and issues there wouldn’t be so much hate. This applies to my subject of abortion, business, war and economical issues.Even though I don’t see abortion as an option for me personally, I could not fault someone for doing it if it was what they thought was right in their situation. I have kept an open line of communication with my oldest daughter since she was little, even about sex and relationships and she has grown to be a responsible, mature, and caring adult. If she ever felt the need to have an abortion, I would make sure that she had her facts, counseling, and let her know that I love her no matter what option she chooses. I was told by a doctor when I was 19 weeks pregnant that I would be better off just to abort for my own health sake.

I did not even choose to think about this option, I got a different doctor. If I would have listened to this physician, I would not have a healthy, happy and joyous four year old little girl I was willing to accept the precious miracle baby that had been chosen by God to be mine. My husband and I will look at her every once in a while and have said, “just think if we would have not been so stubborn and would have listened to the doctor. ” Yes, she was a premature baby, but if I had to do it over again, I would in a heartbeat.

I was 20 when I got pregnant with my first daughter, and no she wasn’t planned, but I put on my big girl panties and took care of my situation and now have a beautiful 21 year old daughter, who recently made me a grandma. Yes, my family wasn’t happy with me being unmarried and pregnant, but I never once have regretted my decision. I raised her as a single mom for many years by myself with the support of my family. In conclusion, even though I don’t believe in abortion personally, it maybe a choice for another woman and my thoughts and personal feeling would not affect her decision.I just look at both of my beautiful, brown eyed girls and know in my heart that I made the right decision in becoming a mommy.
