The following pictures shows how trees have been cut down causing regression of forests, industries have polluted the air, and rivers have been polluted, and animals have been endangered all affecting environment.
THESIS STATEMENT: The church has a God mandated role to tend and care for the environment. Environmental stewardship is mandated by God as is seen in the creation story. Adam was commanded to take care of the garden and all other God’s creation, (Genesis 1:28).Taking care of the environment is a fundamental responsibility of Christians. BODY: a) Who is responsible for the environment? Christians are responsible to care for the environment; however, they have en ignorant and neglected the importance of creation. ‘The claim that Christianity teaches care for the environment has been challenged from both outside and inside the church” (Dewitt &Nash, 2008, Para. 1). According to Restoring Eden, “Our responsibility regarding the land and the wider creation is that of stewardship.
We are stewards of the land and creation, not owners” Restoring Eden, (2010). Christians ought to lead by example in attending, preserving, and keeping watch of God’s creation and not destroying it. Good environmental stewardship is a Spiritual fulfillment of the hurt, as true love for God involves love for all God has created. The fall of man in Genesis chapter three broke all the relationships God had created, including our relationship with nature. As a result of the fall, management of the environment became difficult however, environmental care and management remains a Christian agenda as a spiritual duty before God. For this reason the church and its members has a role in helping the restoration and preservation of the environment at all costs. Gibbers, (2010) says, ‘We have a God-created relationship with nature that we need to acknowledge as with our other relationships. ” With that said it is good to realize that the bible talks about the environment, so lets look at what the bible says.
) What does the Bible say on environment? Psalms 2411; says, that the earth and all that is in it, is the Lord’s “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (chronicles 7:14). This means that our land (environment) needs healing from God. True healing and restoration only comes through true repentance and God’s grace.Christians need to repent and start diligently taking care of the environment by preserving and restoring it. The biblical calls to love, serve, and protect God’s creation need to be respected at all costs. C) Repercussion of bad treatment to the environment.
According to Mueller ; Wiener, recent conversations have concentrated on global warming and trying to reduce greenhouse gases as a result of burning coal or gasoline. This has upset the earth’s climate and the bad news f human being does not stop global warming scientists have said that many species will become extinct. From Kenya we had Professor Hangars Mathis of green belt movement who once in her key note address said this, “Faced with the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, food shortages, worsening poverty and the global financial downturn, it is ever more important that we double our efforts to protect and rehabilitate the environment, reduce emissions of green house gases, and provide especially the smallholder farmers around the world with sustainable ways of increasing heir production and meeting their livelihood needs. The online encyclopedia of the earth has this to say, “Biodiversity is presently critical since we live in the era of the Mass Holocene Extinction, a period of species loss caused by man, and unrivaled in rate of species loss. ” Therefore Christians need to take up the challenge and start being good stewards of the environment. We are under going through many challenges due to the environmental abuse and negligence. Conclusion: Is there any hope for Christians taking the responsibility? Respect to God’s handiwork is the true environment care, and human beings need to maintain their position of good stewardship by caring for the environment.
This would help Christians fulfill God’s command in Genesis 5, “The lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. ” Hebrews 2:8, states that God has put all things under our feet; we are still in charge. To work and care for the garden, or “dress and keep” it meaning to make it orderly, productive, and beautiful. The clear conclusion is that we should indeed be concerned about the deterioration of the environment. Only the Christian has the proper inundation for understanding people’s true responsibility to care for the earth.
