Distinguishing if a Relationship Exists or Can be Established between the Height and Weight of Students Ages 12-16The aim of this investigation is to distinguish if a relationshipexists or can be established between the height and weight of studentsageing from 12 yrs to 16 yrs in year groups 7 to 11 in a mixed in aboys and girls school. To execute this investigation I have toacquire information from Mayfield School survey, this will provide mewith the relevant data which will be interrogated and analysed toinvestigate the hypothesis.
The hypothesis for this investigation, in relation to the aim, is thatthe taller the person the heavier their body weight for both boys andgirls. But that this proportion is different between girls and boys.The ratio of weight to height is lower for girls than for boys. Thisoverall prediction may show anomalies which may contradict thehypothesis.
The method used in this investigation will consist of the followingprocesses.;
1. Firstly I will gather the relevant information from the Mayfieldsurvey and put the data into order for every year group by gender.The summary results are shown in the Table 1Year Group———-Number of boys————–Number of girls—————Total—–
Total number of pupils
…ve correlation apart fromone year where we could say that we were shown negative correlation,year 9 males did not fit the general term where we have someone thatis 1.55m tall and weights 67kg (approx) and someone who is 1.80m andweights 42kg (approx) this results in a negative gradient.
I later went on to see if there was a relationship between everyfemale and every male, I found that there was stronger correlationwithin female as every pupil was close and compact and there was afairly strong correlation within boys but still a couple of pupils didnot fit the trend.
A larger sample would provide a greater level of confidence in theanalysis as relying upon a random selection can only provide a certainlevel of mathematically based confidence
All my work was carried out using Microsoft Word and Excel.
