H. argues that advertising foodand beverages through sport affects those who have been exposed to it, morespecifically the children and adolescent .and says that this way of advertisingmust be stopped. The paper focused mainly ondiscussing the ways marketing is done trough sports and how it affects thosewho are exposed to it. Food and beverages companies use different ways topromote their product in sports, mainly: “sponsorships (i.e., partnershipsbetween food and beverage companies and professional, local, or youth sportsorganizations), athlete endorsements of food and beverages, and the use of foodand beverage company logos and spokes characters (e.
g.,”Red” the M&M) insports video games. These partnerships are promoted through commercials, sporting events, in stores, and online, and food companies spend millions ofdollars on these sports-related marketing tools”(p.6). The paper firstdiscussed about sponsorship and its effects and provided examples of companiesthat does sponsorships such as Coca-Cola, according to the paper form the years2012 to 2016, the time of the Rio Olympics in Brazil wherein Coca-Colaadvertised their product in taking advantage of the event, the risk of obesityand diabetes in the middle class and the lower class increased by a hugeamount.
And the researchers suggests that the sponsorship and advertisements ofCoca-Cola are also causes of the rise in obesity and diabetes..Aside from thesethe authors also provided data and other studies to support their claims on theeffects of sponsorship to the viewers and how it promotes consumption ofunhealthy foods and beverages specially to young children whom according to theauthors are the most exposed to despitethe advertisements being directed to adults. The same way of explaining, givingexamples and sets of data was also done for the athletes endorsements of foodand beverages and the use of food and beverage company logos and sports videogames . The authors were able to provide data that supports their claims andalso gave sufficient explanation and examples for those that are not wellversed in the topic. But the author could have also tackled the said topic in adifferent perspective in order for the article to be more bias free.
The flowof the research paper was also smooth and easy to follow for the readers andthe ideas were properly organized. starting with giving the readers backgroundknowledge about the topic and discussing their points one by one providing examples, charts and tables that would help the readers understand it better and at thesame time it also serves as supporting evidences to the claims of the authors.the authors also included researches and studies conducted by otherresearchers on the same topic also added credibility to the research paper.
