Concrete has a major role in construction due to its indispensability. It is commonly used in the construction of buildings, roadways, bridges, and other infrastructures. Concrete is a mixture of sand, gravel, and rocks, held together with a cement paste. The cement acts as medium to bond aggregates and to clog void spaces between particles (Seifan, 2016). Concrete is an extraordinary material and is convenient to use because of its physical and mechanical properties such as high resistance of compressive load, availability, durability, workability, economical, and aesthetic all at once.
Beside of concrete’s advantages, it is prone to form cracks that allows various chemicals to penetrate into the structure. Formation of cracks in a concrete is a common phenomenon that have a tendency to expand and will require costly repairs in the future if not immediately treated properly (Gandhimathi, 2012). Failure in concrete and decrease in durability occurs due to formation of cracks. Cracks mostly occur during the plastic and hardened states. Concrete structures are reinforced with embedded steel bars due to its ductility and low tensile strength. There is a serious risk of having a crack to a concrete that lasted for 5-11 years. Renovation of aging infrastructure, together with budget limits, procedure for long lasting and positive results was made to formulate concrete repair methods. Nowadays, by performing repairs to critical infrastructure, numerous threats might occur after the success of repair activities. Some of these includes unexperienced labor, unstable weather circumstances, and limitations on repairing parts of damaged infrastructure due to budget constraints. As a result, concrete repairs can go through a short life span due to the development of cracks. Concrete cracks are an important indicator for determining the overall condition of a structure. While not all concrete cracking is detrimental to a structure, the size, location and severity can dictate the usefulness of repairs (Hernandez, 2016). Reinforcement might be destroy as well as concrete when it is exposed to water and oxygen, and possibly carbon dioxide and chlorides that eventually lead to the worsening of the repair area and has a high possibility of increasing the damage if micro cracks grow. Terminating crack formation at the early stage are very essential. Passive and active treatments are the main procedures in treating cracks and voids. Active treatment can fill both interior and exterior cracks while passive treatment can only prevent cracks on the surface area. Large cracks may affect the performance of the structure while the small cracks will reduce the strength of the structure. Therefore, cracking is the main cause of structural failure. One way to lessen the cost and to increase the durability of the structure is to use a concrete that contains self-healing mechanism. This procedure is based on bio-mineralization of bacteria in concrete.
