My interest in droughts is due to the cause it has on my family.
Many of my family members are fame’s and the affects of the droughts have made their crops yields significantly lower, and have financially hurt them. I have a personal tie to droughts and their affects, and want to explore more about droughts. While exploring this issue I want to know how can we fix the drought crises across our nation. Annotated Maxwell, J. , & Soul, P. (2011). Drought and Other Driving Forces Behind population Change in Six Rural Counties in the Lignite States.Southeastern Geographer.
Volume 51, Number 1, Spring 201 1, 51(1), 133-149. The authors Justine T. Maxwell and Pater T. Soul compared the “impacts of drought has on population”, they choose six counties; Douglass Country in South Dakota, Pottawatomie in Kansas, Italian in Oklahoma, Sampson in North Carolina, Bedford in Tennessee, Adams in Indiana. In the study conducted, they selected “counties that had a similar economic makeup to minimize the influence of unique county situations” (145). The cause of droughts in these counties is due to population and agriculture. Drought has been shown to influence migration and population patterns for both historical societies” (142). In certain counties like Adams, agriculture is an important characteristic of its survival with 88,060 hectares promoted to agriculture (142).
As droughts worsen agriculture suffers, which can hurt those involved in the affected areas. The change in population in three of the six counties was a direct affect of moisture availability (145). With the rapid expansion of the Southeast and Southwest regions, the problems of droughts in these regions are only going to worsen.
Populations of agricultural regions are vulnerable o changing drought conditions, thus these vulnerabilities COUld increase if future droughts are more intense or frequent” (145). In this article I do agree with the conclusion that droughts will become moor of a problem in the future. High population and the increase demand of water for agriculture will cause theses droughts to worsen.
This article relate to my topic because the study conducted was located in the Midwest and explains why the droughts occurred in those six states. Pit , D. (2013, USGS 30).Midwest drought: Hot, dry spell brings back crop concerns. Retrieved room http://BMW.
Wunderkind. Com/news/Midwest-drought- returning-201 30830 Droughts have been going on in the Midwest for many centuries now. States like “Des Monies, Iowa has seen under an inch of rain for the month”(Pit, 2013).
With temperatures soaring up to 1 00 degrees in certain areas, the odds of the hot spell to subside are slim. In Iowa they have had an unusually wet spring and a hot, dry summer. A consequence to having a wet spring and hot dry summer is that the soil dries out.Farmers that grog corn and soybean crops have suffered due to the unusual climate change. The perfect storm of a wet spring and dry summer has resulted in significant lowered crop yield.
The affects from the droughts due to a “shortage of corn and soybeans from a bad year would likely have a more immediate impact meat 2013). The lack Of rain is One of the many problems fame’s have been facing when dealing with the droughts. This article does show the affects of droughts across the Midwest and the effects on agriculture.
For example, the lower crop yields will increase the prices in meats. The article neglects to address how farms are compensating for the lack of rain, and ho’ he droughts came about. They did not touch on what methods are being used to water their plants to keep them from drying out. Even though this article lacks in depth, it shows the affects the droughts cause on farmers NC the overall public. Patterson, L. , Lutz, B. , & Doyle, M.
(2013). Characterization of Drought in the South Atlantic, United States. Journal of the American Water Resources Association, 49(6), 1385-1397.In this article, Lauren A.
Patterson, Brian D. Lutz, and Martin W. Doyle focused primarily on hydrological droughts; because of the municipal water supply systems in thief rear are predominantly surface water systems (1385). Hydrological droughts occur when winter precipitation is less than average and the groundwater produced result in subsequently less water in summer days, creating water scarcity. Although the water levels of streams have increased since the 1 970: the water demanded by humans has reduced these levels in stream flow (1387).The authors have defined a drought as an event in which “stream fib falls below a specific threshold for some set time period, specifically below the 20th percentile based on data for the entire record (1930-2010) for that onto and site, lasting for a minimum of three consecutive months” (1385).
The tests conducted compared the levels of stream flow that have showed consecutive months that are below the 20% threshold. The calculations conducted from 1 930 to 201 0 found that in the South Atlantic region it “characterized as being short in duration (less than six months) and occur typically more than five years apart “(1392).The growth of population and industrial entities has increased the demand for a limited supply of water the South Atlantic. As a result of droughts, water management will be nee cause the demand for water will only increase the already scare supply, The concern for droughts will be more prominent with water levels unable catch up with the ever-growing population.
The lack of perception in win days has become a problem; it has been the topic in many newspapers AR news segments. I agree with the authors conclusion that water manage processes will need to be put into place to counter act the growing drought problem. This source answers both of my research questions; the cause o droughts (population and lack of rainfall) and how to deal with droughts (water management).
Griffith, S. (2014, January 9). Climate change and population growth will cause an 80% rise in droughts by 2100, claim scientists. Mail Online. Retire March 2, 2014, from http://WV. Dilemma.
Co. UK/sciences/article-25364 Climate-change-cause-Europe-suffer-80-droughts-claim-scientists. HTML In Europe, they have been suffering from droughts, but the droughts are only going to get worse. The affect of the droughts can be felt at the “end of the century, southern Europe in particular will have 80 per cent more drought than at present” (Griffith, 2014). A major reason for the surge of drought: Europe is due to the increasing demand for water, growing populations, a intensive water usage for irrigation and industry (Griffith, 2014). The incur demand for water has caused severe reductions of river water levels. The water levels could reduce as much as 40% and periods of drought might increase up to 80% (Griffith, 2014).
Scientist conducted future hydrological model predictions of rivers and the affects that will OCCUr over time. The research conducted found that global temperatures will rise 3 3. ICC by 21 (Griffith, 2014). The rise of temperatures over time will cause droughts etc append more frequent and more often. The droughts in Europe are only going to get worse. Although this article was depicted in the Europe and not the United Static still showed the rising concerns of droughts, no matter the country or ROR? The author, Sarah Griffith set fourth good concerns and causes that woo be hard to argue against.
She raises concerns about how the water levels decrease because of climate changed and population growth. This is a got source because it relates back to my question how why they are becoming frequent. KLUDGING, M. , & AIMER METEOROLOGICAL, S.
(1978). Drought in upper Midwest, 1931-1969. Journal Of Applied Meteorology, 1 7(1 0), 1425-1431. While considering this source it was evident that the author Marie Kludging wanted to examine the drought patterns in the Midwest from 1931-1969 and to determine the degree in which the droughts affected certain areas.Throughout the article Kludging broke down droughts over the span of 38 years. The results found that the droughts in sass were evident across man state borders in the Midwest. The “Midwest could be considered the heart of the drought region” (Kludging, 1431). In the regions of the Great Plains they ere heavily affected, while the eastern third were barely affected.
(Kludging 1429). During the 1 sass droughts were “intense, but it was short lived” (Kludging, 1431). Over the 1 sass and 1 sass the measurements of moisture readings were all different across the Midwest.Parts of the upper Midwest showed higher moisture readings, while the lower Midwest had lower moisture readings.
Conclusion After reading these articles have found that droughts are a combination of factors; increase of population over time, lack of precipitation, and agricultural use Of Water. I would not have thought an increase of population loud lessen our water supplies, but after researching about droughts it becomes clear that population influences droughts substantially. While researching this topic I also learned that droughts are a natural occurrence that have been going on for many years. However, they have been becoming more of a problem in modern times.
A claim I can take away from this topic i: that a change needs to be made in water usage, because population growth imminent. In the lecture lead by Deniable Perry, she had mentioned that we should be aware of concern of water in our future. The research that I found purports the notion that Deniable Perry said in her lecture. Throughout my analysis of droughts, the term population was a reoccurring issue that correlated with droughts. In class we had learned that populations are growing exponentially in many corners of the globe. One of those concerns with regards to population growth is the scarcity of water. The scale of droughts occurs all over the world, in some countries droughts are severe to their cultures way of living. In the United States, a one major threat droughts pose in society is on fawners.
The current drought crisis in California has hurt aimers crop yields resulting in higher prices of fruits and vegetables. Going t the super market I have found myself buying less fruits and vegetables because of the price increases.Droughts in many regions of the world have become a problem that cannot be ignored. In the article, Characterization of drought in the South Atlantic, United States, it raised an emphasis on water management, in order to cope with the rise of droughts. The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) has taken that initiative by mentioning ways etc help Improve the world we live in, with their The More You Know public service announcements.
The NBC public service announcement has mentioned numerous ways to help conserve water and energy.
