The lesson will discuss what administrative leave is, along with an example of an administrative leave letter and why one of these will be given to the employee.

Administrative Leave

Administrative leave is when an employee is temporarily relieved of his or her responsibilities until a situation is resolved. Taking administrative leave can be requested by the employee and/or employer. Administrative leave may be needed for a number of reasons, such as:

  • Military Leave
  • Jury/Court Appearances
  • Bereavement
  • Investigation/Internal Reviews

Below is an example of an administrative letter that an employer provided to an employee. Mark Study is the human resource manager at College of Learning. Mr. Study sent a letter to James Murray because Mr. Murray allegedly made inappropriate comments in the classroom to a student.

Lesson Summary

Administrative leave can be initiated by an employer or employee for any number of reasons, including investigations, court appearances, or military assignments. In our example, we looked at an administrative leave letter that an organization provided to an employee when the organization needed time to investigate and evaluate an incident before determining if disciplinary action was needed.In a situation in which administrative leave is needed, the employee needs to make sure to consult with the employee relations or human resources department prior to any administrative leave action to determine the type of leave the employee will have.

It is important that all details are addressed in the administrative leave letter, such as the person involved, whether the leave is paid or unpaid, effective date, what has taken place to precipitate the leave, how long the investigation will be (if applicable), and when or if the employee can return to work. Up-to-date employee contact information should be included as well as the name and phone number for the specific human resources department contact.
