A lot of students need to do study their quizzes and make assigned outputs, assignments, and other school-related activities to have a fair performance in class.

In the modern society, the need to analyze, think critically, and work collaboratively well is vital to achieving lifelong learning. Such skills are needed for them to do well in their school institutions. Such skills would also prep them for the real world. For instance, the Peer tutoring will help them cooperate in groups and learn to adjust despite the diversity of their group mates, in order to achieve goals that cannot be done alone. “Peer tutoring is a term that’s been used to describe a wide array of tutoring arrangements, but most of the research on its success refers to students working in pairs to help one another learn the material or practice an academic task. Peer tutoring works best when students of different ability levels work together” (Kunsch, Jitendra, & Sood, 2007).

In different campuses all over the Philippines, peer tutoring is encouraged among students since it does not only develop personal camaraderie in the school’s community but also develops good interdependence among students. One student assists the other in fulfilling the academic deficiencies. It develops a great friendship while boosting academic performance. One of the challenges faced by students in a well-equipped school with high academic standards is the pace of teaching where some students are not able to cope with their peers, in regards to their different learning speeds and academic capabilities. Having a peer tutor may also help them in their respective academic fields where they may request assistance in repeating certain details in the discussions which they were not able fully to grasp. As observed by Miller & Miller (1995), the international private, and public institutions’ peer tutoring provides an effective method for aiding persons with disabilities as well as their tutor. Both parties are to benefit from this method in a social and educational way due to the motivation they gain from the interaction happening between them.

“Schools across the country are adopting and using student-centered instruction rather than the traditional teacher-directed instructional setting. This method of teaching has increased student achievement in all subjects of the elementary classroom, as well as the use of mathematics in everyday life” (Topping, Campbell, Douglas & Smith, 2003). Schools that are adopting this method of teaching, a more student-centered instruction, is creating a better effect than the traditional teacher-directed instructional setting. With this method of student learning, elementary students, of which they conducted the study with, have a noticeable increase in student achievements in all subjects. And not only that, the more often use of mathematics in their daily lives is worth highlighting to show the effectiveness of this procedure.

According to Carnell (2002), “peer tutoring works because students are given more personalized support and attention. Students are also trained how to learn more effectively and to develop a positive attitude towards learning.”There is an interaction between a pair or a group of people where they could express their ideas to others by getting involved in diverse activities in which they could acquire a knowledge from their peers. It enhances their skills in planning learning activities, organizing, and working with others collaboratively by receiving feedback and assess their own learning.Topping (2008) “cited that peer tutoring leads to better academic performance and enhanced associations with peers. It is not only an option in learning but a very competent one as well. Furthermore, it does not only do a good job in enhancing a student’s academic performance as it also nurtures his associations with peers.”Peer tutoring among students results to heightened scholastic performance and enhanced social relationships.

This activity also increases motivation while holistically improving the students’ personal, and social development. All these benefit the teacher because this means that he/she gains the ability to further instruction by unconventional means while fostering an appropriate behavioral environment for the students. The study of Mastropiere, et.

al (2010)” showed that peer tutoring has social benefits such as higher self confidence and more positive attitude towards school. It was also observed that there is greater learning when peers are actively engaged in academic discussions among themselves. In addition, in peer tutoring, students can learn from one another. The peer tutor helps others learn difficult concepts and increases his own understanding of the subject matter.

“Studies conducted by Robinson, Schofield and Steers-Wentzell (2005), “concluded that peer tutoring increased academic achievement and motivation in tutors and students being tutored.”Peer tutoring is truly an effective way to improve work atmosphere and environment. This means of sharing information and knowledge builds the confidence of the tutee to all the related tasks involved in the work/academic requirement. This also improves great level of teamwork between peers.”Some benefits of peer tutoring for students include higher academic achievement, improved relationships with peers, improved personal and social development as well as increased motivation. In turn, the teacher benefits from this model of instruction by an increased opportunity to individualize instruction, increased facilitation of inclusion/mainstreaming, and opportunities to reduce inappropriate behaviors “(Topping, 2008).

Peer tutoring promotes social interaction between the tutor and the tutee. It also creates new understanding of social skills that help students to become more aware of the things around them. Lastly, they are able to understand the feelings of others better through this kind of interaction.

Its benefits are to assist students academically for them to learn from and through their peers. It also provides developmental skills. It allows students to acquire teaching behaviors and leadership roles. It also promotes an inclusive classroom atmosphere. Lastly, it encourages positive interactions among students.
